Description

Show Description

Every year after Durga Puja, we immerse her into the river — believing she returns to Kailash, to her in-laws, after ten days at her maternal home. And the following year, we collect soil from that same riverbed to build her again. She returns in the same earth. Shaped by the same river. Carrying the same spirit. The waterflow washes away the fleeting colours the body held. But the precipitated soil holds everything that matters. The divine goddess is not distant or unreachable — she is simply the daughter of our very own home, returning every year because she never truly left. This is Punaragaman. The eternal return. Painted in the colours of sindoor and river water, in the light of ten days that feel like forever and end too soon. Watercolour on handmade paper. Original, signed work. Part of the 'Devotion in Watercolour' Series by Dr. Indrani Bose.

Artist Statement

Read Artist's Words

I am Bengali. Durga Puja is not a festival for us — it is a feeling that has no English translation. Every year I watch her go. The immersion. The river. The colours dissolving in water. And every year I think — she is not leaving. She is becoming the earth that will bring her back. Punaragaman means return. But it also means she was never truly gone. I painted this for every Bengali daughter who has ever left home and felt the pull of return. For every mother who watches her child go and trusts the river to bring them back. For the goddess who is also just a girl from our neighbourhood, visiting for ten days, reluctant to leave. The sindoor is red like devotion. The river is teal like memory. The lotuses bloom because some things return even when we think they are lost.
